Skip the full moon party and stay at a place off the beaten path. Meet a few locals (it takes some work, but you can do it!). Don’t hike on the Island without proper gear, including water.

Why I recommend this place to visitors

Calcutta is an amazing mash of old and new, rich and poor, local and foreign. Its accessible to foreigners with a big expat community, mostly volunteers with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. Stay at the Modern Lodge.
