Waimea Canyon, Kaua`i

red canyon on a green island

There are two roads that take you up, the 550 and the 552. Personally, I think the 550 from Waimea has better views.

Keep going past the initial lookout points to the end of the road, which affords you two amazing vantage points to peer down into the Kalalua Valley.

The hiking in adjoining Koke’e State Park is accessible by the same road. The Na Pali overlook trails are beautiful but deceptively hard: you have an easy time going downhill for three miles, but then it’s uphill the whole way to get back. Leave yourself enough time on these trails so that you can get to your car and get out of the canyon before dark.

Kaua`i, Hawai'i

the good and the bad

Waimea Canyon and the North Shore are beautiful, but if you stay in the overdeveloped strip between Kapa’a and Lihue you’ll be stuck in traffic and spending a lot of time staring at taquerias, tattoo parlors and knick-knack stores.

The nicest town on Kauai is sweet little Waimea on the Leeward (south) side. Stay there instead for a chill, laid-back and sunny vibe. It’s right where the turn-off for Waimea Canyon road is anyway.

Kapaa, Kaua`i

too much sprawl

If you visit Kauai, better to avoid the Coconut coast between Kapa’a and Lihue. Too many taquerias, tattoo parlors and knick-knack stores. Stay in Waimea on the Leeward side instead; it’s a nice little beach town with a laid-back vibe and it’s at the turn-off to Waimea Canyon.
