Cebu City
Worth visiting!
Cebu City — 2 years ago
Cebu City is the capital of the province of Cebu in the Philippines and the commercial center of the Visayas. Although the government of the province of Cebu holds office at the historic Provincial Capitol located within the city, the city itself is politically independent of the province. Among its most famous landmarks are Magellan’s cross, the Basilica de Sto. NiƱo and Colon St., the oldest street in the Philippines, so named in honor of the Catalan explorer Christopher Columbus whose family name in Spanish is Colon. It is also home to the University of San Carlos, the oldest school in the country.
The name Cebu was taken from the old Malay word “Sebu” (not “Sugbu”, an anachronistic belief imposed by non-locals) which means full (as in stomach) as Cebu was the most affluent area of the Philippines at the time of its discovery by Magellan.
