Powell's City of Books

Worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

Bring as much money as you can possibly spare! I dropped $100 in an hour. This is definitely the best book store in the entire world and I wish I lived right across the street. It’s surprisingly well organized and there’s always something great going on. I love their prices and they offer the best selection of everything!

A tip I have about this place

Stay close to wherever you want to go—I was only there for a day, but I saw the traffic and it was horrible! I’ve been to other big cities, but this was the worst traffic I’ve ever seen. I suggest knowing EXACTLY where you’re going and traveling significantly before or after rush hours. I would look into public transportation. If you enjoy reading, you MUST go to Powell’s City of Books. It’s the best book store I’ve ever been to. Also, stop by the art museum if you’re into that sort of thing. It’s nothing phenomenal, but if you have time and like art, it’s pretty fun. I would really like to return to Portland for a longer stay.

How this place changed my life

I had been considering a career in architecture or something adjacent. After seeing the architectural capital of America and the birth city of the sky-scraper… I knew I wanted to be part of such a magical community-building experience. I walked around Millenium Park and looked at the Frank Gehry theater, took an architectural boat tour, went to the top of the Sears Tower, visited the art museum, thoroughly explored Oak Park (Frank Lloyd Wright buildings galore), and enjoyed every single second of it.
