I think the people of Romania are really remarkable. The openness and acceptance of ideas and vision from other cultures is something I’ve found to be as refreshing as it is unique in this rapidly balkanizing world.

for a very small, but important historical site.

there isn’t much to see at Ft. Raleigh, where the original “lost colony” was last seen, and by itself it’s not worth the drive. But the village of Manteo is quite cute, and the aquarium is really worth the trip.

On Saturdays and Sundays, I like to drop by Laurie’s Muffin Korner, either before or after a swim, and sit at the bar with my journal. Laurie and her staff are wonderful, fun people, who welcome anyone into their little family of teasing and playfulness. The bottomless coffee is a nice compliment to the fun, safe surroundings, and I always find myself writing great entries, poems, and even essays when I go.

The muffins are, predictably, excellent, by the way.

Chester is a lovely little town with views of the Connecticut River Valley, a cute little downtown area, and several excellent restaurants. Try River Tavern, Sigs, or Lupo. You won’t be disappointed.
