Wegman's

When I am in NoVa

I seem to end up doing the most suburban things possible, such as eating in the cafeteria at Wegman’s or Ikea. Both of which are awesome. It is a nice change from the city, oddly.

Lauriol Plaza

I love this place despite its faults

Way too crowded, food overrated, a little too fratty… but I always have a great time and meal here. First place I think of for happy hour when the weather’s nice. The rooftop is always good. Fun atmosphere. Always go home stuffed and sort of drunk. The shrimp enchiladas are very good.

Pleasant surprise, this place

Matchbox

Busy bar

Not tiny anymore, and the outdoor patio is nice. Great salads.

Expensive but good. That is definitely this place. Very long wine list. The food is French-American, the spices are Indian. Not too bad getting a table at the last minute.

Supreme Court

Oral argument

I went to hear oral argument yesterday in Kimbrough v. US (No. 06-6330). The court was considering the reasonableness standard in sentencing after Booker in the context of the 100-to-1 ratio of crack cocaine to powder cocaine possession.

This was a pretty morning at the beginning of term and two important cases so you had to get in line around 6:30 a.m. to get a seat to hear the first case, Gall v. US at 10 a.m. I got there are 8:15 and got in to see the eleven o’clock argument.

You can take notes, but you can’t take a binder into the courtroom. So just bring a reporter’s notebook or paper and pencil. Lockers are 25 cents. There is a change machine in the coatroom.

James Madison Building

A tip I have about this place

Your first stop here should be Room 140, to your left down the hall when you first walk in. This is the cloak room where you have to check your things and the registration room where you get an ID number and card in order to do research. You can’t just tour this building. Even to go in the periodicals room you have to show your card. It also takes about half an hour to retrieve a book from the closed stacks. So, something to keep in mind when you are planning your trip.

Thai Smile

News about this place

Thai Smile used to be called Smile of Siam a long time ago when it was owned by the Veerasethakuls. Now Toa and her parents are opening a new restaurant in Lexington (on South Broadway) called Thai Orchid Cafe.

Actors Theatre Of Louisville

Untitled

I have seen nothing but excellent theater at ATL. The funniest show I’ve ever seen anywhere, hands-down, was the Actors 2001 production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged. Theater lovers should recognize that Crimes of the Heart was first produced as part of the Humana Festival (I think before it was called the Humana Festival, but I could be wrong about that.)

Bemidji

Worth visiting!

concordia

I went to language camp in the area, and it was beautiful in the summer—may have been even better without all the mosquitos…
