Go in the off season!
The first time I went was in the month of November. While the North Rim was closed, there was plenty of hiking along the Kaibab & Bright Angel trails. The campgrounds were almost totally empty, in fact, there was only one other tent at the campground at the bottom of the canyon!
You also get to experience crazy temperature differences in winter. It was snowing at the top, and in the 60s at the bottom.
