The drive over the pass from the Lima/puno Highway is superb, the market is fascinating, there are hot springs that heat indoor and outdoor pools and a sauna – and it’s the most convenient place for the Colca Canyon.

Hard without a car but we were taken. It has possibly the best temple of them all with terrific views. Near this is a private bus up to an amphitheatre and the remains of a castle and a mosque.
