Wadi Rum, Jordan

Red sand

Hmm…I think if you hire a good guide then the experience can be a lot more interesting.

Coming from Australia – where there’s rather a lot of desert – Wadi Rum was interesting but not spectacular.

Poitiers, Poitou-Charentes

A tiny town

Gateway to the local region, but the town itself is quite dull. We allocated Fri eve to Sun eve but we would have done better just coming on Sat morning and leaving late Sun afternoon. Everything except for the most touristy food places closes on Sunday – even the bus to the Futuroscope (which stayed open, funnily enough).

Renting a car and driving round the area visting castles, etc. seems like a better plan than staying in the city.

We found a strange gay nightclub located in the midst of a residential area, identifiable only by bright blue neon strip lights. A nice and friendly place – one of the patrons got a bit jolly and danced madly in his boxer shorts for a while. Thankfully he put his clothes back on.
