The architecture is fantastic, and there are lots of great historical education and museum type places all over the place. It was really cool for me to visit the museums because, as a yankee—born and raised in New England—it was fascinating to see the other side of the history of the Civil War. I also visited a plantation museum that offered tours of the old slave quarters and the like, and this gave me a perspective on the life of slaves in the south that I hadn’t previously had (it did NOT change my opinion that owning other human beings is morally reprehensible and that our country’s history of slave ownership is something we should be ashamed of).
Savannah also has some wonderful art museums and a restaurant that serves the best pizza I’ve ever had. I also experienced real southern barbecue for the first time while I was there. All in all, I highly recommend Savannah for its friendly people, great historical attractions, natural beauty, and culture.
