Earl Abel's, San Antonio

Untitled

Earl Abel’s is probably the oldest restaurant in all of San Antonio-they’ve been selling fried chicken for 72 years. Their new building, on Old Austin Highway, will never compare to the original location on Broadway (which has now been torn down), but they still serve the same good down home southern food, and still have some of the same fixtures. Order the fried chicken (I promise, it’s worth it).

Make sure to go to Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant. The portions are huge and delicious.

San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio

I went in fall of ‘06, and it was ungodly humid that day. Don’t go when it’s humid, especially if you have kids. You’ll just get sweaty and cranky, and the animals spend the whole day sleeping. Visit the butterfly exhibit (it’s near the monkeys) and make sure you ride the train from Brackenridge park.
