Ketchikan

Worth visiting!

keeping promises

i went to ketchikan for a couple weeks because the marines sent me. the story goes that during WWII, the US wanted to build an airstrip on native american land in ketchikan. the tribe there agreed, but they wanted the feds to build them a road from the village to the port. so about 50 years later, there we were finally building this road for them. better late than never i suppose.

i went to a friend’s wedding banquet here a few years back… and it is absolutely gorgeous! check out this atrium center that they have http://www.yanksing.com/c-venue.htm

anyway, the food is great, and i know it’s expensive. but it’s absolutely the best sea bass i’ve ever had! i want to hold my dad’s 60th birthday here if my brothers agree. and if you’re gonna have a chinese wedding banquet, this is it. and you better have lion dance!

Japantown

Worth visiting!

the fillmore!

this is where you go have dinner before you see your indie rock show at the fillmore _ though parking is hard to find i guess. i just park at the safeway. in addition to sushi, udon, and the usual fare, there’s a couple korean bbq places.

Chinatown

Worth visiting!

yum cha!

this is where you go to have dim sum (yum cha), attend your friends and cousin’s wedding banquets and get your chinese dvds. oh… also get the latest korean and japanese movies too. i mean, if you go to japan town for this stuff it’s gonna cost you $30 to $40.

also a hot spot for boba nai cha, chinese flavored gelato (green tea, black sesame, thai ice tea, lychee), get some dan tat at the local bakeries, and maybe watch some lion dance.

there are some newer chinatowns that aren’t so touristy, in richmond, sunset districts.

i was stationed here when i went to my FROC back in the summer of 1997. memories of over 115 degrees in utilities, raking sand in front of the barracks. those were the days indeed.
