To say I’ve “been to” Almaty is a bit of an exaggeration. We were diverted there on a flight from Delhi to Moscow via Tashkent, because there was too much snow at Tashkent for us to be able to land. We were stuck at Almaty for four hours.

I’ve been to Iceland twice – in 1982 and in 2002. In that time, the main road around the island has changed from being mostly a gravel track to being mostly a modern road. There are still a lot of gravel tracks elsewhere, though.
It’s a very beautiful and wild country, and the locals are very friendly. Not a cheap destination though!
