probably the cheapest meal you can get amidst all the fancy hotels in the area!! Walk into the classy Le Parker Meridien, behind the big curtain, and voila! Although this place has gotten so popular that there are often huge lineups here. More of a novelty to be eating at this “secret” spot. Burgers are pretty decent, no complaints.

I toured the major towns down the country and my favourite places were Halong Bay (take a junk out on the bay, have them cook you seafood, swim in the bay and explore caves) and Hoi An (custom tailoring everything to your heart’s desire!). I can’t say I had the best time with the locals; I got a ton of unwanted,in-your-face male attention that I’d never gotten anywhere else, and the people weren’t as outwardly friendly as they were in other SE Asian countries such as Laos or Cambodia. Still, the good times I had here more than made up for it.

laid back. REALLY laid back. almost too laid-back for this type-a traveller! but beautiful. and the locals are so nice. almost too nice, as I felt bad bargaining with them at the night market. and everything is so cheap, I miss it. fruit shakes for 30 cents (3000 kip), all you can eat buffets for 50 cents, and fishermans pants for 2 bucks. Luang Prabang is a MUST.

I had the best time in Cambodia (Siem Reap, Phnom Penh). It’s a great mix of both sights (Angkor Wat, Killing Fields, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum) and warm, friendly culture! Because it’s so poor, there is westernized infrastructure built specifically for tourists so visiting Cambodia isn’t nearly as “roughing it” as most people think. There are tons of GREAT western (and Cambodian!) restaurants here! Everything operates on the USD. Perhaps the best (or worst, depending on whether you are a sucker) part are the kids- so cute, speak fluent english so you can learn about their culture, and seem to know all the facts about your home country! no wonder Angelina was defenseless!

I’d visit Japan in a heartbeat- I want to experience the madness that is Tokyo, the serenity and beauty in less populated regions, and to eat at Sakai (Iron Chef French)’s restaurant there as well.

I need copious amounts of money to do any of the above, so I don’t think I’ll be going anytime soon. Maybe I should add “win the lottery” to my 43things list??

Untitled — 5 weeks ago

I want to do this, even though it goes against my usual vacation philosophies (to experience a new international culture, see distinctly new things that I can’t see/do at home, travel cheaply). I’ve just heard too much about the white chocolate bread and the trapeze to ever say no. One day, when I have money.

not that I’ve BEEN to Victoria or Iguassu. Niagara is nice, I’ve been there, but I know that there are nicer waterfalls in the world. It’s probably worth visiting if you’re in North America like I am, but don’t head all the way here from overseas just for this.

I was here as a kid, but they wouldn’t let me go on a proper tour of the house because I was too young and potentially destructive. But what I saw WAS gorgeous and I’d like to go back. So here’s a warning to all parents- wait til your kids grow up to take them here!

it was a cute place, but go in good weather so you can get the best of the casinos AND the beach. But I’d pick Las Vegas (casinos) or most other beaches over this anyday.

amazing how far the wall spans- definitely go to say you’ve been, but be prepared for the tired legs afterwards!
