Roma, Lazio

Untitled

Instead of renting an expensive, cramped hotel room consider renting an apartment. When I went in March 2005 I was able to get a gorgeous 2 bedroom apartment in a residential area near the Villa Borghese for only 120Euro a night. It was wonderful to be around the local Romans instead of surrounded by tourists. And after full days of frenetic sightseeing in the city, it was wonderful to have an actual “home” to come home to.

I rented it through the Bed & Breakfast Association of Rome ( www.b-b.rm.it). Let me know if you need any other tips!

Pompeii, Provincia di Napoli

Untitled

Pompeii took my breath away. Walking along the such amazingly preserved ancient streets with the volcano looming in the distance is a truly humbling experience. As an American, it is incredible to comprehend the history behind this place. The United States is a baby and has nothing that compares to this. If you go to Pompeii, definitely get the audio tour at the Visitors Centre, it sheds a lot of light on the areas you will visit. Give yourself plenty of time too, I had no idea Pompeii was so huge!

Napoli, Provincia di Napoli

Piazza Garibaldi - Pretty Scary

My experience in Napoli was pretty disturbing. I caught the train from Roma and spent a couple of hours in Naples before hopping on the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii. Well, the piazza is dirty, garbage everywhere and the air smells of rotten fish. There are people everywhere looking like zombies and following you, hoping to pick your pockets. I felt like I had to have eyes in the back of my head. I didn’t feel safe at all. Maybe only this part of Napoli is that way? I was too scared to explore further, it seems the more I walked, the worse it got.
