I am going to Venice later in June for 2 nights (Saturday and Sunday) and could do with some advice on 2 topics:

1. dinner
what are the best authentic (ie frequented by locals!) restaurants?

2. being a tourist
what to avoid. or what to avoid missing. are there any places that 95% of tourists never see, but really should?

and as a bonus question, any random tips about getting around or good places to chill with an espresso.

Well I guess I am glad I went there, but it is a nasty, crowded, over-merchandised hell hole and is the worst possible advert for NYC.

I loved the City – the buzz, the vibrancy, the variety and the hidden quiet coves – but Times Square blows.

don’t tell your users they can’t submit a post because there is an application error, when the posts actually get submitted.

it makes me look like a fuckwit when the reality is that ruby left the rails.

Above average (without being excellent) Tapas bar in the redeveloped Oxford Prison.

Good menu, a nice range of spanish beers, and the cava sangria is well worth trying.

Quiet in the early evening but buzzy, bordering on noisy, from 8pm onwards.

Service can be slow.

on Other People’s Money it is worth visiting, on my own… not so sure

anyway, Amazon were paying both times and it was good

Allegedly the bridge at Bickleigh (pictured) was the original inspiration for Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Bickleigh is worth a visit just for that.

Actually that is all there is at Bickleigh apart from a family pub and a cluster of houses.

A worthwhile stop-off on the way to or from Exmoor.

each of my many trips to Seattle included dinner in Gordon Biersch – it is the ideal place for dinner when jetlagged

fast service, crisp beer, predictable menu

sometimes you need to be on a conveyor belt and Gordon Biersch is exactly that

I am not sure what kind of claim that is, but they are resisting all effort to designate them a town.

I visited Haifa three times, with only 5 nights in total – business trips.

So I have only seen Haifa from hotel, taxi, office and restaurant, which is no way to do it justice.

However, from what I did see I definitely want to return as a tourist some day.
