No Swimming

There’s a jungle trail behind the ruins that leads to a lagoon nearby. A sign at the entrance of the trail shows that you can swim there. If you like swimming in a swamp…then yes, there is swimming. Sure, it doesn’t look like a swamp, but don’t be fooled. If your hoping for nice dip after traipsing through the jungle go elsewhere.

Get there early

...and you’ll have the place to yourself. After 9am the hordes of tourists arrive and muck up the whole place.

How this place changed my life

I saw WILCO here. It was amazing.

Was almost not a city

During the last census most of the residents were at a soccer match or at the pub watching the match on TV. No one was home to be counted. The city almost lost its status as a city.

A tip I have about this place

Don’t drink tap water. Dogs drink tap water. People drink spring water. The locals will think better of you. Better yet, just drink beer.

A tip I have about this place

A great town. I suggest visiting the Cat’s Paw, but don’t try to rip any of the Gibson defects off the wall. The bartender will beat you with a bat.

Tang

I was kicked out for having Tang in my nalgene. We may or may not have started a fire in the park because of it. I didn’t light a match or anything. But Smeed and I willed it…with our minds…and it happened.

A tip I have about this place

Go before you forget how to have fun. Escape reality and see more bands in one weekend than some see in their entire lifetime.

A tip I have about this place

Start out early. Head up the Jenny Lake trail to Surprise Lake, around Disappointment Peak, north across the glacier and up the saddle to the Teewinot Mountain (12,325 feet). About a 6-8hour hike if you don’t stop to pet the bears (kidding…never pet bears no matter how cute and cuddly they look).

A tip I have about this place

Great for long hikes and decent camping. Try to get there in Autumn to catch the leaves changing…the colors are amazing.
