Makawao

Worth visiting!

Untitled

Polli’s Mexican Restaurant is a must to visit when in Makawao. It had a great atmosphere and the food was delicious. We had Tacos followed by cheesecake and I can never get over how huge the portions can be in the USA so we were very full. Afterwards we walked around the town and enjoyed the ambience. I would love to visit again someday….bank balance permitting!

Lahaina

Worth visiting!

A review of this place

Lahaina is a super little town. During my holiday on Maui I ate in Bubba Gump’s Shrimp restaurant with my family. The food was delicious and it was the first time I had ever seen my Grandmother drink beer!
Afterwards we went for a walk around the town and I bought a pale pink cashmere pashmina in Banana Republic. I still wear it now and every time I wrap it around me I remember my amazing holiday on Maui.

Memories...

I was only six years old when I visited Egypt with my parents and my Brother so my memories are a little hazy as I am now 25 years old!
What I do remember is how exotic and mysterious Egypt seemed, the vibrant colours, tantalising smells and unfamiliar language meant the whole trip was like a magic carpet ride.
I recall the amazing Bazaars, the scent of incense burning and the delicious felafel we purchased from a stall then ate in the street.
The concept of fast food was truly credible there as no sooner had we asked for the felafel than they were ready!
Visiting the pyramids and sphinx at Giza was amazing and I sat on the back of a camel but I did not ride on it because I was too small.
We stayed at two different places during our holiday, Cairo and Luxor. The hotel in Cairo had a swimming pool so that was my favourite and Cairo seemed daunting in comparison because it was so noisy and busy.
We rode a faluka boat down the Nile and ate on a floating restaurant. My family tried traditional Egyptian meals but I stuck to a hamburger and chips!
It was a beautiful, diverse place and I would love to visit again as an adult.

My bad luck holiday.....

I went here many years ago on holiday with my Mum. It was a nice two week holiday spent swimming in the sea, lounging by the swimming pool and sunbathing but on the last day the bad luck which rained down on us was just unbelieveable.
Firstly I got the spines of some poisonous sea urchin stuck in my heel whilst swimming in the sea. We went back to the apartment where we were staying to find my Mum had locked us out sealing the keys INSIDE the apartment! We went to get a spare set of keys from reception but as we were on the seventh floor we decided to take the lift (elevator) down. We got in to the lift and three people with heavy suitcases got in after us. We pointed out that the lift was overloaded but they did not care and next news it crashed down three floors, ending up stuck between two floors. Luckily nobody was hurt and we all managed to crawl out of the lift through a small gap in the doors. To say it was the worst holiday ever would be putting it mildly but it was not the fault of Almeria which is a very pretty resort.I have a phobia of lifts (elevators) even all these years later.
I guess it was Friday th 13th or something!

Caen

Worth visiting!

Why I recommend this place to visitors

I lived in Caen for one year as part of my French and German BA Honours degree course. I studied at the Université de Caen and lived in a student residence there called Lébisey.
I would describe Caen as a town rather than a city and it has a lovely close-knit and welcoming feel. The town of Caen boasts an excellent tram system called Twisto which operates within the town and its environs affording residents and visitors an inexpensive way to get around.
Every Sunday there is a fantastic market which takes place at the Porte de Plaisance quayside area. The market offers amazing produce from all over the region of Normandy. Try the Tarte aux Fraises for a real treat! The market is a great way to see French life in action as people haggle over the price of a roast chicken and sit by the water eating chunks of fresh baguette.
The Chateau Ducal is another must to visit whilst in Caen, and there are two great museums inside the Chateau walls; the Musée de Normandie which explores life in Normandy through the ages and the Musée des Beaux Arts which houses diverse works of art.
The river side is a perfect place for a picnic on a sunny day and there are many Boulangeries nearby to pick up a baguette to munch on. I have so many fond memories of Caen as there is so much to see and do. I cannot recommend it enough. My tip for cheap travel to Caen from the UK is to fly with a budget airline such as Easyjet to Paris Charles de Gaulle, catch the Roissy Bus to central Paris then catch a train from the Gare St Lazare to Caen .The train ride takes about 2-2.5 hours.
Alternatively, ferries run direct from Portsmouth UK to Ouistreham which is a short taxi ride from Caen centre.

Paris

Cafe au lait

I have been fortunate enough to visit Paris many times and there is no doubt that it is a breathtaking city which offers so much to see and do. Last time I was there I enjoyed shopping on the Boulevard Haussman and visiting the Musee Delacroix and of course the Louvre but most of all I just enjoy walking around the city absorbing the culture and history and watching life pass by me.
There is no doubt that the inhabitants of Paris are fashion conscious, yet to me their style seems rather formal, relying mainly on the traditional Chanel inspired glamour of a suit and a chic scarf tied at the neck and of course a classic handbag. In order to appear more French, try ordering seulement ‘un café’rather than ‘un café au lait’ as the French like their coffee strong and dark. I being a true coffee philistine prefer heaps of milk in mine!
