Nashville

Worth visiting!

If you're in the area

I wouldn’t plan a trip to Nashville, but if you’re going to be in the area, it’s worth stopping by some of the main attractions.

It could be a great town, but their planning (or lack thereof) doesn’t help.

Loch Ness area

I was fortunate to have a free week’s stay at an estate just north of Loch Ness, a few miles from Drumnarochic (sp?). Reminded me of Oregon with the varied landscape and microclimates. The estate where I stayed is named Kilmartin Hall and was featured in the film “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.”

The Kennedy School

Worth visiting!

I wish school had really been like that

The food is not that great but it’s worth a movie and a beer (at the same time).

Portland

Worth visiting!

No big attractions, just good livin'

Portland is a town to experience, from all the local brewpubs to Powell’s bookstore to the surrounding countryside. It’s easy to get around downtown and close in areas. There are lots of vibrant neighborhoods, each with their own appeal. There is wine country nearby, loads of hiking opportunities, and plenty of coffee.

I live near an old elementary school that was converted into a hotel (the old classrooms are where you sleep, still with blackboards on the walls) with three bars, a restaurant, an outdoor soaking pool, and a theater, which is in the old auditorium filled with couches and comfy chairs rather than regular theater seating. It’s call the Kennedy School in northeast Portland. Don’t miss it.

Carbondale

Worth visiting!

Small but interesting college town

Carbondale is home to Southern Illinois University and near the Shawnee National Forest. It’s a friendly small college town with a few fun places to visit in the downtown area and a small strip of bars and restaurants.

Students have been known to get a little crazy in town during Halloween. Right outside Carbondale are many funky, interesting small towns. The SIU campus is beautiful and includes a small lake. The area is great for those who are looking for a less congested place for biking and hiking.
