Florida Caverns State Park, Marianna

Off the beaten path

Most people that I know have not even heard of the Florida Caverns State Park (and I live just an hour away). However, I was looking for something to take my mom and nephew to that would be memorable. Its not a place to go for someone that is afraid of the dark or tight spaces. In some places it is amazingly open and spacious but in many spots people over 4 feet tall have to crouch or bend over.

I found the place enchantingly beautiful. From the surface the ground looks like any other place in Florida. Knowledgeable guides will give you the history of the caverns, the formations, and point out interesting features. At just $6 a person for adults, this is a great experience and an affordable outing for a family.

Wakullla Springs, Tallahassee

Worth the visit

Wakulla Springs is truly a wonderful place to visit. Entrance to the park is $4 a car and their are jungle cruises through the swamp. Although calling it a swamp is a little misleading since the water is crystal clear. They have glass bottom boat tours on days when the water is at its clearest (call ahead).

Even on bad days the jungle cruise runs, we saw dozens of alligators, herons, egrets, anhingas, turtles, pikes, gars, wood ducks, osprey nests, and lots of other fish and wildlife. The cruise guides are really good about getting the boats in close and keeping them steady so that you can get great pictures. The boats are small enough so that you can ask questions and move around.
