The Cow

Worth visiting!

Similar to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

If you like the very old pub and cramped restaurant feel, then you’ll enjoy this place. The serve up good Italian food out of very small kitchen.

Try not to sit by the door if it’s cold outside. People who come in, often don’t close the door.

Fergburger

Worth visiting!

Great menu

Their menu includes such items as ‘Bun Laden’ (falafel) and Bambi Burger (venison). The burgers here are really tasty, and very large.

Christchurch Cathedral

Not worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

$5 per person suggested donation – just for having a looksee! They were doing some remodeling when I went. It was pretty average as far as cathedrals go. Not very much information, or apparently historical significance.

Rainbow Springs Nature Park

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Great place to see the Kiwi bird

The guided night tour I went on was excellent. You can see the Kiwi bird outside without a net or glass between you and the bird. The giant trout were interesting to see as well.

Natures Wonders Naturally

Not worth visiting!

A review of this place: Wonder where the penguins are

The reason people come here is to see the Yellow Eyed Penguin. Of course they aren’t out for most the day, so chances are you won’t see one as part of your tour. There are many better places where you can see the penguin for free, no booking necessary!

Otorohanga Kiwi House

Not worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

You will want to see the Kiwi bird if you’re visiting New Zealand. This isn’t the only places to see them, and there better places which have the bird. The Kiwi House also has a number of other birds, so but unless you’re a bird nut, you’re probably just stopping to see the Kiwi.

Orbit

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Just when I was ready to give up on revolving restaurants

I visited Orbit and was impressed with the food and decor. I’ve been visiting revolving restaurants for quite a while, but the problem seems to be that they were all built in the 60’s or 70’s and are quite run down. The Sky Tower being just 10 years old is relatively new as far as these types of buildings go.

Ray's Pizza & Cafe

Worth visiting!

Why I recommend this place to locals

As an American expat, one of the things I miss in Australia is good pizza. When I saw a pizza place called ‘Rays’, I figured it must be worth trying. Every block in New York has a “Ray’s Pizza”, and they are all locally owned. I’m not sure if “Ray’s” is a popular name for a pizza place in Italy, or if that just the name Italians use when they open their shop.

This place had the best pizza I’ve had so far here in Australia. Ray’s has a brick oven, and serves there pizzas with a thin crispy crust. They offer both take out and a small dining room. The dining room only has about 8 tables, but they do take reservations.

Horace Rice Sporting Sales

Not worth visiting!

A review of this place: Not very friendly

Generally I prefer to shop an smaller, locally owned shops, and avoid multinational corporations like Walmart(BigW) & Starbucks, but there times when I regret doing this, and hope that a big chain comes in and displace all the local shops.

Such is the case with ‘Horace Rice’. They don’t have a very generous return policy, but they were rude and unsympathetic when I asked to return something. I hope that a Rebel Sport, Modell’s, or some other chain moves in and offers the same stuff for lower prices.

Mayville

Why I want to go to this place

My great-grandfather Jens Egge was born here. I’d like to visit here and see what historical things I could find.
