Mozambique, Africa
My first day in Lorenzo Marqueis, now Maputo
I arrived in Mozambique after a short 1.5hr flight from Johannesburg aboard a TAP 727 during the beginning of the civil war between the Frelimo and the Portugese. Upon arrival at the airport one could tell that there was a lot of confusion of who was doing what. The heat struck me as a 16 year old boy, the tropical air, the smell of the city and it’s enviorment made me soon realize that the comforts of Scandinavia were far off in a more distant world. The sightings of guns, chaos, and beginning of civil unrest was soon going to be a part of my life. Upon leaving the airport we were on the way to the docks where I was to join the m/s Inayama as a cook’s assistant. The ride from the airport to the docs were about a half hour and during this ride we had to go thru two passport controls, one with the Frelimo goverment and the other with the Portugese. Upon arrival at the Frelimo stand we were told to say Viva the Frelimo’s and the same at the Portugese Viva the Portugese in order to get the taxi to take us all the way to the docks. Upon boarding the ship we could hear in the far distant as the sun was setting the sounds of bullets from guns being fired off near the city. This was my introduction to the life of a certain other part of the world in which changes were taking place.
