Kings Landing Historical Settlement

Worth visiting!

Kings Landing

In the late 1960 the Mactaquac Dam was built on the Saint John River above Fredericton. This resulted in flooding above the dam, so many homes close to the river would be lost. Luckily some of the historic homes were moved to higher ground and the Kings Landing Historical Settlement was established. The settlement is a re-creation of life as it was in the 19th century in New Brunswick. The staff wear historically accurate clothing and you can see various farming, carpentry, milling, agricultural and social traditions in practice. There is even a working water-powered sawmill and gristmill. The general store sells reproductions of what would have been in the store and you can even buy flour that was ground in the gristmill. There is entertainment and food at the King’s Head Inn as well as other special events through the season. It’s a wonderful glimpse into the past.

Smiling Goat Organic Espresso Bar

Worth visiting!

The first time I went to this place

I heard about a new cafe that opened in Halifax that had a Clover coffee brewer. It apparently makes some of the best tasting coffee with a high-tech vacuum press method, so I went in yesterday and had a cup and I wasn’t disappointed at all. It was very smooth and delicious and worth paying a bit more.
It’s a great cafe with a range of organic and fair trade coffees along with some food as well in a cozy atmosphere. I have to go back and have another cup of coffee as it was great.

The Mud Room

Worth visiting!

The last time I went to this place

Yesterday I stopped in to the Mud Room before it closes and is renovated and will be reopened under new management. I had my usual dark roast and I bought a couple of bags of beans to have some of the great coffee for a few more weeks.
Since the school where I work moved across the harbour to Dartmouth, I haven’t been in very much at all, but I miss the friendly atmosphere and the strong coffee.

The Vegetarian Lunchbox

Worth visiting!

The first time I went to this place

I saw the sign before the cafe opened up and I didn’t have a chance to go in until today, but my first trip to The Vegetarian Lunchbox was very nice. I had the Veggie Peace Burger with some mango chutney and it was quite delicious. For desert I had a Chakra Ball, which is a chocolately ball that was yummy as well.
It’s great to have a vegetarian restaurant that also has some great vegan options. A cozy little cafe with good prices and tasty, healthy food is a very good thing.

Eos Fine Foods

Worth visiting!

Great Natural Foods

Downtown in Wolfville on Front Street is the beautiful health food store known as Eos. Lots of healthy supplies with flours, beans, spices, tea, as well as cookbooks, cooking utensils, and all sorts of other great foods and treats.

Freak Lunchbox

Worth visiting!

The last time I went to this place

I found out that they don’t allow you to take pictures in the store. I also found out that they have milkshakes, but I haven’t tried one yet.
So many different candies and chocolates and toys. It will take a very long time to sample all of the candies and I can always find things that I like.

Biscuit General Store

Worth visiting!

Why I recommend this place to visitors

It’s a great store for clothes and other things that hipsters need. Lots of unique stuff with a cool hipster vibe. They recently expanded and have almost twice as much space. With notebooks, postcards, candy, toys and clothes that I occasionally buy, it’s a lot of fun with a range of products from cheap to not so cheap, but always cool.

The Wooden Monkey

Worth visiting!

The last time I went to this place

In the summer it’s great to go to The Wooden Monkey because you can eat outside on the patio in front of the restaurant on Argyle street. I had my usual meal of a lentil burger (made very fresh and very delicious) and now instead of an english muffin-style bun, they have a larger and thinner pita-like bun that is cut in half for even more lentil burger goodness. Always delicious with mostly local and organic food. Very vegetarian-friendly, but also good for carnivores.

Blomidon Provincial Park

Worth visiting!

The last time I went to this place

I went hiking on the Jodrey Trail today with my son. It’s a great hiking trail with some steep sections, but it has an amazing view of the ocean with the Minas Basin as you ascend or descend beside the cliffs. I love it as it really feels like an accomplishment when I realize how high the park is.

The Med

Why I recommend this place to locals

It’s good food at very reasonable prices. I usually will have the falafel with fries. I love it and it’s a cheap meal that is fresh and fast.
