Lockhart, Caldwell County

Untitled

Lockhart still has a small-town feel but they’re renovating some of the main street buildings and traffic can be a bear. The movie “Waiting for Guffman” was filmed here in 1996. With all the advertising they have, I was expecting Black’s BBQ to be packed on a Saturday night, but we walked right in. I also expected the bar-b-q to be better, but it was about average for the area, on par with Luling.

Coupland, Texas

Sculpture garden

The town’s a quick stop between Martin and Elgin, but a few blocks off main street you’ll find an amazing collection of art by Jim Huntington. With more than 30 pieces crafted from green granite and steel, this makes Coupland a tourist destination waiting to be discovered.

Mammoth Cave, Mammoth Cave National Park

Try the Star Chamber tour

You’ll need a week to see all the highlights of Mammoth Cave National Park. We stayed in a snug, one-room cabin in the park itself. Amenities were basic — vintage 1950s fixtures in good condition. The cabins were a short walk to the main building, which includes tour info, a souvenier shop, and a restaurant.

Lit entirely by hand-held lamps, the Star Chamber tour is my favorite experience of any cavern. I was amazed at how quickly my eyes adapted to the dark for a more “realistic” view of how early cave explorers saw Mammoth. We saw the remains of cabins where people lived for health reasons (yes, year-round in the cave), and our ranger guides knew terrific light tricks.

Photo: After turning off the lights, a ranger lit the way with a single lighter. I caught him looking around with this four second exposure.
