Dublin, County Dublin
The most inviting welcome ever!
My friend and I got on the plane from Boston at around 7pm, prime time to have a drink with our dinner. 6 hours, 2 glasses of wine and 4 whiskeys later, we arrive in Dublin at around 7am.
First thing we need to do is call the man we’re staying with, who’s at work, so we can get his keys and find his apartment.
We need a pay phone. The pay phones in this lovely city cost about 1 Euro for each phone call. Luckily, my friend had the foresight to get change at the airport. We call our boy 3-4 times, but he’s stuck in an office with poor reception on his cellular.
Before we can even get a hold of him, the pay phone eats the rest of our coins! Then, from around the corner as we blink drunkenly into the early morning sunlight, a man rounds the corner, asks us if the pay phone is broken (yes!) and not only fixes it, but gives us back our lost Euros!
It was the best first hour in a new city/country I’ve ever had.
