I live about an hour from Amarillo in a very small town, so I have to come to Amarillo alot for various things. Its a city that has alot of small town values because all the people from the small towns in the area, move to Amarillo at some point. The city has a low crime rate for its population, and is rapidly expanding. Every week a new gated community or business center seems to start construction. The hopital district is like no other in the area. Everytime a family member or myself has had to go to Amarillo for an emergency situation, the nurses and doctors have been kind and patient in explaining procedures.
Since Amarillo is the biggest Texas city you’ll drive through on I-40, they tend to try and make the city as “Texas” as possible. There are Indian trading posts, The Big Texan with thier famous 72 oz. Steaks, and recently, the overpasses on the highway have been painted with browns and turquoises, to try and emphasise the strong native american and Mexican influences Amarillo has had. Its not the place I want to make my home in the long run, but it is a good city with its flaws like any other.
