Scottsdale

Not worth visiting!

A review of this place: Snottsdale or Snobsdale?

I can’t decide which name I like better.

I suppose if you’re a tourist with the $$$ to spend $400.00 a night for a (very nice) resort hotel room, then it might be worthwhile (personally I’d rather have a beach nearby).

It does have some good restaurants. That’s about the only reason I go there.

Otherwise it’s noted (locally) for well-off right wing snobs.

Seriously, it’s not a very interesting place. It’s a wealthy suburb of Phoenix with a touristy “old town” downtown and not much else.

And if you live in the area…well I’ve already put my in $.02 on that. :)

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Not worth visiting!

A jumbled-up mess.

For anyone.. I suggest letting someone else do the driving to/from Sky Harbor.

It’s as if they tried to lay this place out as poorly as possible.

Terminal 1, doesn’t exist anymore but they never bothered re-numbering the other terminals.

Terminal 2 is actually about the most convenient (although it’s small and old) but since odds are that you aren’t flying United, Continental or Alaska Airlines. Therefore you won’t be using this terminal.

Terminal 3 is fine, once you get inside it. But getting inside it is a pain. It’s much bigger than 2 but only has a single roadway that’s very crowded. And whomever designed the parking garage should be shot.

Terminal 4 is the newest and the “showplace” and also where you will most likely end up (the two biggest airlines in Phoenix are in this terminal- Southwest and US Airways).

And it does have two level roadways..but they sill are horribly laid out and you can easily miss your turn if you are not paying very good attention (and I live here!).

Once inside terminals 3 and 4, everything is nice, but you have to get inside first….

Phoenix "History"?

This is about as good as it gets when it comes to historical places or areas in Phoenix to visit and that’s pretty sad.

Yawn.

Central Library

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Interesting Place.

It was built in the 1990’s with architecture that’s a throwback to the 1970s.

But I kind of like it anyway.

And nothing beats a main library when it comes to selection. You can spend hours just browsing through old magazines.

The Varsity Restaurant

Worth visiting!

My arteries clog just thinking about it..

It’s about the worst possible food (health-wise) you can eat. And a lot of people I’ve known just don’t care for it. But those same people will eat at the National Fast food chains…

But I love it. Give me 2 Chili-Cheese dogs, Onion Rings and a Frosted Orange any day!

Oh and the fact that it’s historic doesn’t hurt either.

The Virginia-Highlands

Worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

The neighborhood is correctly known as “Virginia-Highland”. There is no “s” to be found in the name.

But a lot of the old-time locals butcher it too.

The name itself is derived from the two streets that cross the heart of the area: Virgina and Highland Avenues.

Fox Theatre

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Cool but vastly overrated.

Awesome building, in a cool location. Unfortunatly the Fox was built for movies and not for stage productions.

It’s a cool building. It’s fun to visit and you almost feel “glamorous” when you enter the place but…..

The acoustics are poor and so are the sightlines.

There is almost no rake making it more difficult to see the stage from the orchestra seats.

If at all possible, avoid seats under the balcony. And if you’re in the balcony, don’t bother with anything beyond the first 5 rows. Why? The acoustics suck.

The stage is huge. So huge that it often dwarfs the productions on it.

Frankly the Fox is vastly overrated. Atlanta seriously needs a good theatre (on the order of the Alliance but a bit larger) for Opera, Ballet and touring plays, musicals and concerts.

Were it not for the “cool” factor of the Fox, I’d say don’t bother. But then you pretty much have to bother if you really want to see a particlar Opera, Play or Concert…

Beautiful city.

Great people. Great food. Great scenery.

Praha

Worth visiting!

Awesome.

It’s probably the most “European” of big European cities.

That might explain why so many movies have been made there.

Prague has “subbed” for a lot of other places in Europe in the movies.

It’s beautiful. The cobblestone streets are fun (but not too comfortable to walk on for long).

It’s damn cold in the winter though. :-)

Newark Liberty International Airport

Not worth visiting!

Even for airport "fans" like me...

it’s a hellhole.
