Pinery Provincial Park

(in Canada > Ontario)

Worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

You must book a campsite Well In Advance if you want to stay here. People who book late often get booked into one site for one night, then have to pick up everything and move to another site for the next night, etc.

If you’re making a reservation ask for a shaded site. The sun is intense here and the humidity adds. That said, this is one of (if not the) best provincial park in SW Ontario.

Point Pelee

swimming and stuff

The best swimming is at North West beach. The beach is sandy and so is the lake bottom. Also great for picnics and there are some outdoor grills scattered throughout the park for barbecuing.

Another cool thing to do is to rent a canoe and paddle through the marsh. There are some nice winding turns full of water lilies, turtles, and red-winged black birds and then it’s a straight paddle across the open pond. An hour’s leisurely paddle will take you to the other side where you can beach the canoe and see (and swim in) Lake Erie again. The marsh has a boardwalk and tower/lookout for looking out over the rushes and water.

There’s a train (a van with some covered trailers with seats) that will drive you out to the tip where you can get out and walk down the beach to Canada’s most southern tip of mainland. The waves change the shape of the point on a regular basis. Undertows make this area not safe for swimming but there’s plenty of swimming in other parts of the park.

power

there’s something powerful and magical about trees this old and big. I’m hoping to get here around the end of July 2006.

Willistead Manor

Worth visiting!

beautiful and historical

This is a gorgeous old building (built 1904-1906) with a great big park (15 acres) around it. I go every year during Art in the Park and since I have friends in Walkerville I usually end up there a few other times each year. I’ll be going there for a photo meetup April 30, 2006. Every December they do tours with the manor all decorated up inside. It’s also very popular for weddings.

Palmerston library, theatre, lots of busking and fruit markets along the sidewalks. I like this area much more now as a visitor than I did as a resident.

Yellow Grass

Family History

When my grandfather was a child, he and his family settled in Yellow Grass as newcomers to Canada. He eventually made his way to Ontario as a young adult and I heard so many stories about his hometown that I’d love to see it for myself some day.

Sharing

The nice thing about 14 km of freshwater beach is that there’s room for everyone. So if you’re like me and not crazy about the busy strip with all the shops you might enjoy kiteflying at dusk when all the daytrippers are leaving. It’s unstoppable.

Quiet, not far from Windsor

About 1/2 hour from Windsor. I lived here in the early 90s. The town is cozy, lots of Victorian architecture and lots of fun at Lakeside Park at the foot of Queen Street, between Queen and Division. Lake Erie gives the park its name.

Awesome Chinese Szechuan Eats

One of Windsor’s best vegetarian restaurants. Try the spicy garlic green beans, the moo shu vegetable (you can get it with no egg) and the homemade tofu. Mmmmmmmmm.

City of Yumminess

I’ve lived here for 8 years now. I’m on the edge of the city and it makes for a quick escape but if I need to get into town for some reason it’s not that far across.

There are more and more good vegetarian places to eat so I’m happy.

This photo is of the Detroit skyline as seen from the Windsor riverfront.
