Hamelin Pool, Shark Bay

Untitled

an unassuming boardwalk takes you out to pretty Hamelin Pool, whose hypersalinated waters allow stromatolites to survive. what are stromatolites, you ask? good question. they look like little grey lumps of calcified rock sticking out of the water. not terribly exciting, until you realize that the cyanobacteria living on these stumpy rocks are the direct descendants of the oldest living organisms on the planet. kind of puts things in perspective.
