over 5 years agoI did my student teaching on Madeline Island. It was a one-teacher school – grades 1-8. Wonderful experience. Great people. Beautiful island.
It was an excellent way to start my teaching career.
over 5 years agoAlaska is very diverse. It is also HUGE so do your homework about where you want to go and what’s reasonable. You cannot get everywhere in the state by road.
Beautiful places: southeast is gorgeous. Just take the ferry. You meet interesting people, see beautiful scenery, and can travel rather inexpensively. (bring a tent to set up in the salarium)
The interior: Denali, Fairbanks…. Denali is a must. You can take a bus into the National Park. Good chance of viewing great wildlife – caribou, grizzly bears, fox, moose, etc… and if you’re lucky you will see the mountain (it’s so huge it creates its own weather and is often covered in clouds).
The best thing about Fairbanks is the people. You won’t find any place friendlier. University museum is great. Go out to Chena Hot Springs.
Kenai/Seward peninsula – beautiful. Take a charter boat out for some great sites. Some excellent places for backpacking….
Those are just a few places around Alaska I have been.
