Make a reservation!

Even if it’s a Wednesday night in the off-season. We learned the hard way.

New Mexico Museum of Space History, Alamogordo

Plenty of the things to see

We stopped here after we visited the Trinity Site and before we camped at White Sands. There are many interesting displays, inside and outside of the building, and it’s not just for space aficionados. There is enough here to generate interest within girlfriends who have little to no background on the subject of space travel. Some of the exhibits are many years out of date, mentioning future plans for the Soviet space program, for the sake of example, but there were also volunteers there to answer questions. The International Space Hall of Fame is inside among the exhibits, and the final resting place of Ham, the first astronaut, is at the foot of the flagpoles.

Trinity Test Site, New Mexico

Untitled

There were hundreds of people there, perhaps thousands over the course of the day, for the October opening. It was like the crowd at an airshow, with t-shirts for sale and a tent where they were conducting a demonstration with geiger counters and household items. There were people from all over the world and a man playing a pipe of some sort. We were able to identify trinitite at ground zero. It is a unique oppurtunity to visit within White Sands Missile Range, but be aware of the regulations; I had to leave my .22 rifle at the gate. We scheduled our entire roadtrip to accommodate our visiting this historic site, and we certainly weren’t the only ones.
