Gabriola Island

Worth visiting!

ahhhh the ISLANDS man

you need to take your backpack, some flip flops, search deep within for your inner hippie, and step out of the matrix for a summer

the San Juan islands are one of the most beautiful places on earth, there are great things happening out there. learn how to build a Cob house or the science behind energy healing and meditation. all it takes is an open mind!

here are some names of some of the islands,

Saltspring (kind of the biggest most widely known island)
Galiano
Saturna
Gabriola
Pender
Hornby
Mudge (there are no cars, only trails)
Cortes (home of the hollyhock retreat center) http://www.hollyhock.ca/

Troy

Not worth visiting!

After the nuclear bombs

most towns will look like this.

This place – and pretty much the entire state, was just creepy. People peering suspiciously out of broken windows in run down suburban slums, mass stretches of concrete highways carving across the landscape, alienating people from each other. I honestly think the car is one of the worst inventions for human well being ever invented. (I would give nuclear bombs the number one spot but just looking at places like Troy and Albany makes you realize we don’t need them, their effects happen anyway)

On the whole – I have to say, I was very disillusioned with the states, it’s one hell of a desperate place. Honestly, I’ve seen better situations in 3rd world countries. If you’ve ever seen East Hastings in Vancouver – that’s pretty much my experience of the eastern states.

Untitled

I taught english at a high school in Bartica which is a town on the esiquibo river for a few months. was fantastic. hoping to go again in the next year or two. it’s an amazing country to visit, unfortunately most people who visit don’t know much about where they are (classes were frequently interrupted by American christian missionaries who would put on poorly choreographed plays about the vengence of god) on this topic i could go on and on – otherwise it was a fantastic experience. travel tips would include sticking to the outer regions, i know that there has been a lot of violence in the southeastern regions, and also sometimes in georgetown. oh – and also only drive the road to the airport during the day – it’s one of the most dangerous stretches in the world at night.

all my love to the puff doggies.

Mais Oui mais non

I lived here for a year – gorgeous with great music and art – hung with artists and neopolitical philosophs – haha – but for f* sake i speak french FLUENTLY and i was still given a hard time because i’ve got a French accent, not a Québécois accent, and according to them being French is worse than being English. Couldn’t handle the hate man, hate not great, am I right?

Worth visiting!

we small wee beasties

After Hong Kong, I came back home to Vancouver – what i used to think of as “the big smoke” (i’m from vancouver island) and holy crap i had a bad case of density perspective – culture shock if you will – i LOVE that feeling. So, ACTUALLY, Vancouver is a tiny village. and we are all tiny intelligent (possible, depending who you talk to) ants.

oh – and the ex-pat kids i was hanging with have fantastic mixed accents and exotic origins. and i am completely jealous.
