My family is from Sassenberg and Ilde, near Muenster. I visited in Fall 2001, and hope to get back soon.

Minute Maid Park

Worth visiting!

Untitled

This may round out the top 5 I’ve seen. Yankee Stadium, Camden Yards, Minutemaid, Kaufman, Miller Park.

I lived in Houston for a while…I miss watching a night game after the open the roof back up, and you can see the Houston skyline, and feel a humid gulf breeze blowing through the park.

Kauffman Stadium

Worth visiting!

Untitled

one of the nicest stadiums in all of baseball, especially now that they have real grass. Too bad the owners are so near-sighted and financially driven that they can’t field a decent team…Next to Yankee Stadium, this may be the crown jewel of ballparks, in terms of comfort watching a game.

If you go, sit out in right field, on the first row next to the home bullpen and the outfield wall. There are some old school Royal fans that are a blast to watch a game with.

Miller Park

Worth visiting!

One of the top 3 ballparks I’ve been in – great sight lines, the lower deck seating areas feel intimate enough to be a minor league park without feeling overcrowded, and nice wide concourses. Clean, too. Only drawback…they serve water and call it beer. This seems to be a Milwaukee thing though. lol.

Ameriquest Field

Worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

Visit the baseball museum/ranger hall of fame in the center field concourse. Three floors of baseball history…spent three hours in here and didn’t see everything.

RFK Stadium

Not worth visiting!

I’m a native of the area, and was shocked at how filthy this stadium was when I saw the Mets-Nationals in 2005. I saw more rats than nats fans. seriously, they’re everywhere.

The first time I went to this place

....was the second game ever played in the park.

Turkey

(in Europe)

Worth visiting!

More later

I’d live in Turkey if I could. I’ll write more about it, but here are some places to visit.

Ilhara Gorge near Ankara. Eat an evening meal at Keve in Taksim-Istanbul. Stay at the Harem hotel on the Asian side, and you’ll have the most amazing view of the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofya, and a commanding view of the Bosporus. Walk the ancient byzantine ramparts around the old city. Take a ferry from the European to the Asian side, and see the ocean of jellyfish in the summer. Stand in the footprints of Roman soldiers at the Aya Sofya. I can’t stop…this place is incredible.

Caddo Lake

Worth visiting!

Untitled

This is the only natural lake in all of Texas (and half of it sits in Louisiana). Most of this lake is pretty rough – take even a short canoe trip through the wetlands and you’ll see every type of wildlife you can imagine including very large alligators, egrets, eagles, etc. The photo I posted is of Potter’s point.

In the 1840’s there was a battle between two different “gangs” in the Texas badlands (along the US border). The gangs were the Regulators and Moderators. The leader of the Moderators was a man named Robert Potter (also a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, one of the first Texas senators, and the only Secretary of the Texas Navy). One night, the rival Regulators tracked him down to his home at Caddo Lake. To avoid being shot, he ran to the edge of the lake and leapt in as his wife watched. He was shot in the head as he swam away.

Caddo Lake is an amazing place to see – both in terms of Texas history, Native American history (it’s the home of the Caddo Indians), and wildlife. An amazing place that is worth visiting – plenty of b/b’s in nearby Marshall, including some really amazing turn of the century hotels. Also, some great camping in the state park along the lake.
