Salzburg, Salzburg (state)

Untitled

This was the first place I ever went outside the United States (well, the traveling took me through Munich but literally just passed through, so doesn’t count.)

I have lived on The Sound of Music for years, understand — I went with my high school choir, and we had just completed our senior musical — you guessed it. (I was, sadly, just a nun, having lost my favorite parts to the plethora of talented girls in my class. I digress.)

To go and SEE these places, to stand in Nonnberg Abbey and poke around the countryside — it made the whole world real to me in a way it never was before. Ever since, I’ve had wanderlust, just to recapture that feeling.

OH — and this is not a little thing. But for a singer, there with my choir, one of the coolest and most powerful moments in my life came when we stood in the Dome and sang as the choir for an Advent Mass. Sheer bliss and awe.

Those ghosts

We stayed at a lovely hotel on our visit — part of a post-high school U.K. trek. Can’t remember the name, but it seems to be haunted by the ghost of Bonnie Prince Charlie…

We didn’t meet him ourselves, but had a wonderful time scaring our younger tripmates.

Also, we had no trouble at all staying here and commuting for daytrips to Edinburgh across the Firth.
