New Orleans, Orleans Parish
A+
My parents lived here for 5 years while I was away at school in Virginia. I came home for 2 summers, and I’ve got to say that this is one of the greatest places in the US. The people are friendly, the party atmosphere is 24 hrs. Live music can’t be beat.
My parents lived 1.5 miles down Carondolet (turns into Bourbon once it hits the quarter).
The quarter isn’t everything, there are plenty of GREAT bars in uptown.
It’s going to take years to rebuild the place, and who knows, it may never become what it used to be…I’d like to go back and revisit.
Fairfax, Virginia

As far as standard of living, Fairfax is good. Raising your kids here, they’ll have great public education. The area is pretty diverse, a long stretch of cultures from Asians to Indians to Eastern Europeans.
That being said, you’d need a pretty good paying job, or work 2 mediocre jobs 60+ hrs a week to be able to live in the decent areas.
The area is filled with government and IT employees.
Can’t say that there is a ‘deep’ history and culture to the place, but Washington DC being 20 minutes away, I’m guessing that could satisfy the yearn.
