Extremes

Nevada is a place of extremes, in my mind. There’s gambling everywhere, and the decadence of Las Vegas is one of the first things I think of when Nevada is mentioned. The Tahoe area is beautiful and lush, in a way that most of the barren desert in Nevada isn’t. I80 is a long, boring highway, where most of the people are just trying to get through Nevada as fast as possible.

Vegas = worth visiting
Reno = worth visiting (once)
Tahoe = worth visiting
The rest = not worth visiting

San Luis Reservoir

Not worth visiting!

Maybe if you have a boat...

It’s near Hollister. There are a couple of large bodies of water, but it’s so windy here that they yank boats off the water often. Other than the water, it’s dusty and pretty barren. Don’t go if you’re primary activity isn’t going to be water-related.

They’ve got some RV sites with water and electrical hookups, and plenty of tent sites. The tents we saw were practically blown away in the wind (which is apparently quite common), and I’m glad I wasn’t in one.

Moab

Worth visiting!

Awesome!

I’ve gone almost every year for the past 9 years, and love it. I go for the mountain biking, but if you like adventurous outdoor activities of almost any sort, Moab is for you. Rock climbing, trail running, rafting, kayaking, Jeeping…Moab has it all.

Moab’s also got some great National and State Parks. Arches and Canyonlands are both wonderful.

Avoid Moab in the middle of summer—it’s just too hot. My favorite times to visit are April and October. Beautiful colors and cooler temps make spring and fall the times to go. If you’re there for the mountain biking, why not head to nearby Fruita, Colorado?

Fruita

Worth visiting!

Sweet, sweet singletrack

If you like singletrack, you’ll like Fruita. If you like Moab, Utah, you’ll like Fruita. Heck, if you like mountain biking at all, you’ll love Fruita. When you pick some trails to try out, I suggest “Moore Fun.”
