On my first voyage to france I landed in Nice and started a 2 week excursion there. The mediterranian was nice and since it was the beginning of june, it was deserted since the french people had not taken their vacations yet. Everyone in Southern France seemed laid back and were cool about peoples inability to speak the language. The farther north you get the more people expect you to know and understand french, also the cities tended to get more filthy. All in all not a bad place to go and see. Lots to do and so much history to learn. Definitley recommend going.
