Nigeria, Africa
To the Misinformed
Contrary to ignorant opinion, Nigeria is not just a country full of maruading thieves and 419 scammers.
It’s a beautiful country with scenic vistas, very friendly and hospitable people, rich in cultures and traditions, a deep family oriented society with a heritage that is as old as the earth beneath them.
The cities are very organized and highly developed with alot of them like Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt reminding a weary traveller of New York, London and Vancouver. The people don’t live on trees, the streets are paved and most people own cars.
It’s a country that has a populance of about 120 million…there are people everywhere! Rich in lore, language and beauty, there are numerous hangout spots, movie theaters, clubs, nice restaurants. Most of the people speak English or pidgin with the tribes comprising of the main Yoruba, Ibo and Hausa to the lesser known Urhobo, Benin, Efik etc tribes.
The rural areas are a bit more underdeveloped than the cities but still have the basic amenities like electricity and water. Be careful what you eat and drink though, your body might not be adjusted to the climate.
The only drawbacks are the humid temperatures expected for any Equatorial clime. And the mosquitoes…be sure to get your shots and bag your bug spray!
I’ve been there a few times, ended up staying several months on a few occassions, and attended a few weddings. Definitely a MUSTSEE event….try and get an invite to a Naija wedding, and if you can’t…gatecrashers are always welcome! (Remember they are super hospitable!) They are also very friendly and accomodating to tourists.
Use the basic travel guidelines as you would in any other country, don’t flash your money and passports etc. Just be safe and have a great time!
