The Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge (http://njpolarplunge.sonj.org/) was held for the last time in Point Pleasant in 2006. The “official” story was that there were too many people from the plunge, most having ties to law enforcement in other municipalities, acting drunk and disorderly and the town not having enough police of their own to manage them. I have done the plunge for seven years now and have seen precisely two thoroughly inebriated people during that time. Both barely made it out of the water and I doubt either of them were standing up much longer afterwards.
Seaside Heights, further south and with a far more alcohol soaked boardwalk than Point, has graciously taken over the Plunge. I think once Point realizes how much money it loses from the event (most of the boardwalk is open for this, including restaurants and arcades), they may try to coax Special Olympics northward again.over 6 years ago
