Paros

Worth visiting!

I only spent one night in Parikia

but I think I saw enough. It was a nice town, in spite the incredibly fat dogs. The restaurants on the beach boulevard (old town side) were lovely. At the time being, there was festival in town and they gave free food and ouzo to everyone. We thought that was strange, but cool. (The same repeated then in Athens.) I don’t quite understand this greek thing with rusk, cheese and ouzo, but people seem to enjoy it. Also we ran into some interesting art galleries. An art school filled with Americans was ending their cemester and they had a exhibition and a party in town. (I wonder who those people were and why they studied art all the way in Greece, ‘cause after seeing the exhibition I’d say they didn’t have any superior artistic talent. But I guess it’s fun alright to study on a greek island for one spring.)

Naxos

Worth visiting!

My favourite island on Cyclades.

The island is not too crowded by turists, at least not on low season. This means that the hotel owners are fighting over you, which isn’t always nice. Other than that, there’s plenty to explore. We went hiking to the inland several times, it is very lush there between the valleys. The tiny inland villages amaze too. And yes, I ate the best pita gyros in Naxos Town (vegetarian of course). Naxos Town is very beautiful and cosy.

Santorini

Not worth visiting!

A review of this place: I'm not quite sure why I would praise this island.

It’s beautiful alright, and the history of it is exciting, but what’s the point in places that live for turism and where you can hardly see any locals. I didn’t feel comfortable with the fact that the locals all work for my convenience. (I know I’m aggravating, I only saw three towns of the island.)

Greek Islands

(in Greece)

Worth visiting!

The greek islands,

they may not fulfill your dreams but they will show you something totally different to love.
People are always trying to help you, even if they only speak greek. It took me a while to understand that a word that to me would mean ‘no’ is actually a positive answer in greek. I saw people throwing guinea pigs on to the street, people singing to me in a minimarket, dogs that were so fat they could hardly move, hot springs that were a laugh, walking trails through amazing flower fields and silent hills where sheeps were the kings.

Polttaa kesäkatu kuuma

It was hot as in hell, but I had a lovely time. (That’s just the summer in Germany, what do you expect in a country that has no lakes?) We did some shopping for our new apartment, walked around in HafenCity and in Reeberbahn. Great terrace bars! Prostitutes seen: none. (If you don’t count the naked women in the city post cards.) The group day card for the public transport was a good idea, even for two people it pays itself back.

I NEED to go back

I am still missing the experience of staying on the camp side. And I do know that it is half of the festival spirit.

At the festivals

I never thought I would make it to the Roskilde Festival, ‘cause it’s something I’ve only heard about all my life, but this year – there I was. It was like no other festival before and somehow it was such an honour to be a part of it. It’s not just for everyone to have a good time, the workers there are almost all volunteers and it also donates all its profit to charity. And now I’m one of these people who think about going back there every year. Why? Dunno. There’s something about it.

The town of Roskilde is really small, just 20 000 people living there, but at the time of the festivals, it was crowded by 100 000 people. You did notice it. But everything worked. The Danes were friendly, the hostel in the harbour was cosy and peaceful, it was all wonderful. And the weather was heavenly. (I’ve heard about the mud in year 2004.)

Going back

Well I’m gonna have to go back since I already have a scheduled date here. But it’s a nice town anyhow, despite the Japanese.

Despite the dark alleys

It was a sparkling city. And I felt like home.

Magical

It was such a refreshing experience to find a huge garden in the middle of Frankfurt and it’s stony buildings. Even though it was winter.
