Been living in Edinburgh for just over 10 years now, and seen it change a lot in that time. The city centre seems to embody more and more the whole Jekyll and Hyde nature of the place (J & H being based on Deacon Brodie, a real life character, and fairly average pub), with Princes Street looking beautiful in terms of the buildings but then you have the little neds (chavs) running around with bottle of Buckfast. Quick rule of thumb for visitors is to avoid people in tracksuits, especially if they are wearing baseball caps at angles of greater than 30 degrees to the horizontal, either they’re Neds who may start channelling the spirit of Begbie at any moment, or they are people with no sense of style and decorum anyway. That aside there are many great sights to see in the city if you’re visiting, and all fairly close together, for crime fiction fans I’d recommend a pint in the Oxford Bar on Young Street, the spiritual home of Rebus and a fine place for a steak pie and to watch rugby. Anything you want to know, just ask.
