Sorry to say, because I LOVE Maine, but OOB is not a nice place to visit. It is all tacky T-shirt shops and biker bars. There are lots of pretty places worth visiting on the Maine coast – this is not one.

There are no real attractions, as such, but Biddeford is a really interesting place. The mills are amazing, and Biddeford Pool, the village by the water, is magical, retaining much of the fisherman-village character.

Gorgeous – varied and rugged.

Not a vacation destination, but a wonderful place to live. Streetcar suburb very near Boston (adjacent to Cambridge), with great, walkable character, cultural and socioeconomic diversity, and the best Diner around. Town Diner in Coolidge Sq. (on Mt. Auburn st.) is in a historic diner car, but is no greasy spoon – they have wonderful food.

If you are on a trip to Boston and you are interested in history or beautiful places, there is one Watertown site I would recommend going out of your way for (#71 or #72 bus out of Harvard Sq.) – the Mount Auburn cemetery, a National Historic Landmark dating to the 1830s and the beginning of the landscape cemetery movement in the US. A place of glorious beauty, and site of the burial of many of the most significant New Englanders of the 19th and 20th centuries. The cemetery does a great job interpreting the history, with audio tours and a good map, and is open dawn to dusk every day.
