So I’m heading to the airport and haven’t got a place to stay booked for when I get there. 10 Minutes to check-in closes.

Check-in clerk: “And where will you be staying?”

Me: “I don’t have anywhere booked yet I was going to see what I can find when I get there”

Check-in clerk: “Well I’m afraid you can’t enter the country without providing an address for at least your first night in New York. I can’t ;et you board the plane. If you can find somewhere in the next 10 minutes then I can let you on” Grins at me as if to say Good Luck!

Me: “Where’s the nearest internet point?”

Promtly I run up an escalator, pay for internet access and search for anywhere cheap just to have an address. My friend wrote down the address and goes back to the check-in desk while I book the place. 2 minutes to spare. Phew!

When we finally landed, got through passport control (that was a whole different story), got the the hotel. It was not a pretty sight. We spent the whole night full clothed wrapped tightly in the blankets we stole from the Virgin planes so as not to be bitten by the 100s of bed bugs. Lovely.

The moral? Book somewhere before you get to the airport.
