Gibraltar, British Overseas Territories

Mix UK and Spain - and presto - you've got Gibraltar

Nice place, but the low prices on booze, tobacco and electronics make the shopping street a bit boring (unless of course you are there to buy booze, tobacco, or electronices). If you are going to buy some electronics – check the prices on the Internet before you go – and start bargaining. As most electronics shops are owned by the same family – stay in one shop – they call each other to alert each other of stubborn tourists.

Apart from shopping – go to the top of the rock – the Mediterranean Steps are good exercise (especially when going up). The view is excellent.

Montevideo, Uruguay

One weekend ought to be enough though

Nice people – the place itself looks decayed and is actually not overly interesting.

Spent 14 days in Montevideo working – nice people drinking a huge amount of mate, great weather, nice beaches, and a number of nice restaurants.

The beaches are nice – but as Montevideo is located by the river – the water is rather brownish. Go somewhere else in Uruguay to enjoy the beaches – e.g.. Punta del Este.

Dublin, County Dublin

Good - wish I had more time there

Went to Dublin for three days. Had a good time – did most of the “must do” cultural stuff – National Gallery (which was OK), National Museum (which was really interesting – I had little knowledge of Irish history after 1800), Trinity College (looked nice), Dublin Castle (see centuries of architecture within 100 metres – quite a mess actually), Christ Church Cathedral (interesting), different parks (people are actually allowed to use the parks – sit on the grass, some backpackers taking a nap – thumbs up).

Temple Bar is a bit too touristic, but go north of Liffy or just west of the Temple Bar area – nice pubs and restaurants.

And the Irish sense of humour – it is truly excellent! Asking at the reception when we had to check out. Prompt answer: “We’d prefer if you leave before dawn, but if you really insist on staying – we won’t kick you out before 12.”
