I visited with my mom and Stepdad when I was in elementary school and it was fantastic. I know I would appreciate everything more now, but I had fun playing with spider monkeys, riding horseback through the rainforest and touring the beaches and San Jose.

While I’m not the biggest fan of visiting tourist traps, Cancun is gorgeous, the snorkeling off Cozumel was great, and many good meals were had. I don’t think I would go back, because there are many less-touristy places I want to visit in Mexico and Latin America, but it was a nice vacation.
A word of caution, though: Be extreme careful about where you eat and what water you drink. It’s very easy to get parasites, rashes, or general infections if you’re not used to the local bacteria and the sanitation isn’t uniform.
