Glen Rose

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Fossil Rim in Glen Rose

This is a drive thru animal refuge way out in the middle of nowhere (Glen Rose, Texas). It has the best White and Black Rhino, and Cheetah breeding history in the US and is actually a really cool place to visit. The animals are in wide open spaces and often close enough for you to see easily from your car. The caretakers take the health and comfort of the animals seriously and your money paid to get into the place is well spent. I’d recommend going during the spring for baby season when most animals tend to give birth. You’ll see Tons of baby animals of various kinds. There is a behind the scenes tour you can go on too that allows you to see a lot of animals that are not on exhibit due to the need for privacy to breed – like the Black Rhinos, Cheetahs, and Maned Wolves. Seeing these animals in a way that doesn’t stress them out and getting to ask lots of questions of someone who works with them is priceless.

Houston Zoo

Worth visiting!

How this place changed my life

This Zoo has been growing and changing by leaps and bounds! Sure you can argue that any Zoo is depressing and one smack dab in the middle of a swamp like Houston might seem more so – but it is actually a really pretty Zoo over all and a lot of the exhibits are well thought out and comfortable for the animals and the visitors. My only major issue with the Zoo has always been the lack of respect shown by the public visting more so than anything that the Zoo itself was going wrong. I worked in both the Carnivore Section (bears and cats) and the Children’s Zoo (both the old one and the new one opened in 2001) and I have always been shocked at how badly people behave at this Zoo in particular. It’s amazing. So if you do decide to pack up some water and head off to see some truly cool animals at this Zoo please remember to keep your trash and hands to yourself and to remind yourself often that this is a Zoo not a Circus so they animals laying or standing there not moving are not there to entertain you – they live there. Thanks.

A review of this place: Niko Niko's is Great Greek Food in Houston !

This place is sooooooo good! Good prices, comfy atmosphere and it’s almost always busy – so that means it’s gotta be good! Really yummy food! I recommend it to anyone in the Montrose area looking for some good Greek stuff to eat! :)

Houston

Not worth visiting!

How this place changed my life

I moved to Houston from California in 1997 and my life took a dramatic change. I met my now ex-husband. I began working at the Houston Zoo as a keeper, found myself a stalker, and watched the city grow and expand daily. It really is a stange city. Not a lot of culture left though it does have history, which is being torn down and replaced by shiny new buildings faster than you can shake a stick at. I was very happy to leave there in 2002 and I sincerely doubt I’ll go back to visit. Now that it has had an influx of New Orleans refugees I have heard some pretty disturbing things…

New Orleans

Worth visiting!

Totally worth experiencing !

New Orleans I’ve learned seems to be like tattoos or ferrets, either you LOVE IT and become almost addicted or you go once (or never) and it just never calls you back. I visited New Orleans for the 1st time with my Dad years ago and as soon as we got off the train and drove into the French Quarter I felt it… This place is Magic. I went back a few times a year after that fateful visit. The smell of the city is something I can’t even put into words. It’s like a maisma. There is so much to do, see, eat, drink, experience you could never do it all in a short week long vacation. I am heart broken over what has happened with Katrina and the citizens of that city. I am thankful though that the parts of the city that attract the most tourist was not damaged too badly. Money will return to New Orleans. It will rebuild. I will return.

Utah

Worth visiting!

Really pretty state

I visited a friend who lived in Park City a few times and was surprised at how clean and pretty everything was. Even in the snow, everything still looked Pretty… Also while driving across country from Texas to Oregon (twice) Utah was hands down the prettiest state we drove through. Last time we went through we stopped for lunch at a tiny town called Echo and it was just amazing! You could almost expect to see a covered wagon coming around a bend at any moment. It was a picture in time. Gorgeous. Lots of Mormons, lots of blonde people, but also a lot of pretty scenery.

Sierra Madre

Worth visiting!

I used to live there

I loved Sierra Madre ! Walking through the hills and looking at all the old houses packed in there was always a good time. This little town has held it’s own for so long and still has so much of it’s unique qualities left to it. A real small town feel right in LA county. Crazy. When I lived there in the 90’s I remember having a mountain lion walk down Baldwin Avenue. They only made it a few blocks before being chased off back into the hills, it was still a Thrill to see! The church in the original movie “The Fog” by John Carpenter was across the street from my house. And “Return of the Living Dead Part 2” was filmed in part in “downtown” Sierra Madre. I miss that little city!

Pasadena

Worth visiting!

I grew up here !

The house I grew up in was built by the same guys who built the Gamble House (Greene and Greene) – that place is AMAZING and worth seeing. My house was Way less formal. There is so much to do and see in and around Pasadena. And so much history… It will always hold my heart and I miss it dearly.

Caldwell Zoo

Worth visiting!

Really Nice Zoo in a Really Small Texas Town

I worked at this Zoo for just under 3 years. It’s actually one of the best Zoo’s in the US and it just happens to be in a little East Texas town in the middle of no-where… If you like visiting various Zoo’s like I do – it’s definately one to see! They are working very hard to make it a place that makes an impact on visitors and things change daily. I miss my animals dearly. :)

Yellowstone National Park

Worth visiting!

What an amazing place !

I went there years ago for a 2 week vacation with a friend of mine, who while driving through the park for days on end REFUSED to ever get out of the truck! She would hop out, take a picture, then hop right back in. I barely had time to enjoy the scenery through my scenses… Alas, I am going there for my honeymoon and this time I’m getting out of the car! By the way – while we were there a woman was killed by a bison while jogging down the road in the early hours of the morning. Crazy…
