Glen Rose, Texas

Fossil Rim in Glen Rose

This is a drive thru animal refuge way out in the middle of nowhere (Glen Rose, Texas). It has the best White and Black Rhino, and Cheetah breeding history in the US and is actually a really cool place to visit. The animals are in wide open spaces and often close enough for you to see easily from your car. The caretakers take the health and comfort of the animals seriously and your money paid to get into the place is well spent. I’d recommend going during the spring for baby season when most animals tend to give birth. You’ll see Tons of baby animals of various kinds. There is a behind the scenes tour you can go on too that allows you to see a lot of animals that are not on exhibit due to the need for privacy to breed – like the Black Rhinos, Cheetahs, and Maned Wolves. Seeing these animals in a way that doesn’t stress them out and getting to ask lots of questions of someone who works with them is priceless.

Houston Zoo, Hermann Park

I used to work here...

This Zoo has been growing and changing by leaps and bounds! Sure you can argue that any Zoo is depressing and one smack dab in the middle of a swamp like Houston might seem more so – but it is actually a really pretty Zoo over all and a lot of the exhibits are well thought out and comfortable for the animals and the visitors. My only major issue with the Zoo has always been the lack of respect shown by the public visting more so than anything that the Zoo itself was going wrong. I worked in both the Carnivore Section (bears and cats) and the Children’s Zoo (both the old one and the new one opened in 2001) and I have always been shocked at how badly people behave at this Zoo in particular. It’s amazing. So if you do decide to pack up some water and head off to see some truly cool animals at this Zoo please remember to keep your trash and hands to yourself and to remind yourself often that this is a Zoo not a Circus so they animals laying or standing there not moving are not there to entertain you – they live there. Thanks.

Niko Niko's, Montrose

Niko Niko's is Great Greek Food in Houston !

This place is sooooooo good! Good prices, comfy atmosphere and it’s almost always busy – so that means it’s gotta be good! Really yummy food! I recommend it to anyone in the Montrose area looking for some good Greek stuff to eat! :)
