The opportunity to act as a leader on the Vienna Summercamp 2006 had drastically changed my life. I now have lifelong friendships with people of all over the world…I also was given the great pleasure of observing these friendships be made as well…“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.” – Helen Keller

Guangzhou, Guangdong

The village

The great thing about China is its vast diversity of landscape, people, and economies. I’ve frequent Guangzhou many times during my trips to Hong Kong. However, it was the year that I decided to go with my mom to her home village that really opened my eyes. Less than 20 minutes away from the prospering city of Guangzhou, we went to the country side to see chickens running free, and me…peeing into a hole made out of wood planks…into the river stream…as graphic as that sounds…that was the toilet. I’m not saying that this experience is unique or anything…but it sure humbles oneself. I remember dreadfully hating that trip. But looking back, I’m so glad and fortunate to have been forced to go there. My goal is now to go to Wu Bei…my ancestrial village.
