I would like to recomend Shrewsbury. Its the birthplace of Charles Darwin but the charm of the city will win you over right away. The little streets, buskers, buildings, will all hold you captive. Don’t forget to explore the country-side, after all if you have ever read any James Herriot thats his turf and you will want to go :)

Rent a canal boat! If you are going to experiance England you can have the bustling cities, but when its time for some down time go rent yourself a canal boat for a few days. Make sure everyone agrees to drive once in a while and dont cram any more than 6 family members on one boat! Get out and walk along the canal once in a while, sit on the roof and watch the world with a glass of red wine. You wont regret it.
