The Veggie Grill

Worth visiting!

Really enjoyable new vegetarian option for eating in OC

Like I’ve said many a time elsewhere, I’m omnivorous - what matters is good food, first and foremost. I think the Veggie Grill folks have nailed a good combination here - tasty cuisine in a Native Foods style, but a little more affordable (handy for the college students, to be sure!) while not skimping on either taste or creativity. Our party had everything from soups to salads to sandwiches and desserts, and from the steamed kale to the sweet potato fries to the carrot cake and more besides, it was a winner. Recommended!

Pete's Cafe And Bar

Worth visiting!

A weird mix of the snooty and the relaxed but...

...the important thing is that they’re there if you need a quick dessert fix after eating elsewhere, if you’ve not eaten there earlier. Handy for shows over at the Smell too. It’s nice, it’s there, I won’t assume it’s deathless but I’m glad it’s around.

Bar 107

Worth visiting!

The right mix of dive and elegance

More on the dive side to be sure. Great selection, solid bar staff and the atmosphere is fantastic. Perfect for in-depth chats about things in their booths, as we all found out the other day. By all means go!

Hotel Barclay

Not worth visiting!

They don't let you take pictures inside...

...which I think stinks. So to heck with ‘em.

Pitfire Pizza

Worth visiting!

Pretty good, solid enough gourmet pizza

Thin crust specialities, a bit snooty in the right way (wine pairings with the pizza), they deliver, good range of choices…if I lived in the area I might make it a more regular thing but it was definitely good for at least one visit! Keep it in mind if you’re in downtown.

Clifton's Cafeteria

Worth visiting!

Go for the atmosphere, but not the food!

It is, indeed, cafeteria food—basically I snuck in just to have some bread and dessert after a massive late lunch during a break at ArthurNights over at the Palace. But the design and look of the place is a total treat, great to sit in and chat with friends or just people watch.

Palace Theatre

Worth visiting!

Went here for the ArthurNights festival in 2006

Had never really been in this area of LA before, shame on me—glad to finally go, it was a good experience and I enjoyed the theatre v. much. It’s frayed around the edges, no question, but I thought both the main stage and loft area made for good performance spaces, if not totally designed for the bands who played there in terms of gear and amplifiers.

Mentone

Why I want to go to this place

One reason and one reason alone, I admit - this Washington Post story which mentions that this the county seat of the least populated county, Loving, in the lower 48 states. Total permanent residents in the county at the time of the story - 81. Will I ever get here? I don’t know—but I like the idea that somehow, one day, I will.

Chakra

A rumor about this place

Hmm…the more I hear about this spot, even though it’s near where I work, the more I understand the portions are skimpy and the food is overpriced. So, no.

Tropika

Worth visiting!

Excellent Malaysian and Thai cuisine

I am not really familiar with Malaysian cuisine as such, though I am with many of the cuisines and areas surrounding that country, so what you eat here won’t be surprising to anyone familiar with Thai, Chinese, Indonesian or Indian cooking. As a melange of all those elements with some styles and tastes of its own, it’s killer, and this restaurant provides filling, tasty food with good service. Wouldn’t mind going back!
